Neighborhood

The neighborhood around 320 E Gunnison Ave offers a comfortable, low-key home base for a mid-term stay in Woodland Park. It’s a quiet residential area with a true local feel, while still being just minutes from grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and downtown amenities. The setting is peaceful and walkable, with mountain views and cool alpine air that make longer stays especially enjoyable. Easy access to Highway 24 makes commuting to Colorado Springs or nearby mountain towns simple, and the area is well-suited for remote workers, traveling professionals, or anyone looking to settle in and enjoy a slower, nature-focused lifestyle for a few months. Area attractions (find links in our Welcome Guide) • Pikes Peak, America’s Mountain • Manitou Springs. Shopping, restaurants and eclectic shops. Cog railway Incline. The Manitou Incline. • Shop and dine in Old Colorado City • Zipline, Hot air balloon rides, Segways, Jeep Tours • A free geological wonder • Old west mining town with casinos • Fishing, hiking, camping • White water rafting • Epic Royal Gorge Our go-tos that might be hard to find. Local knowledge! • Best place to sled is in Rampart Range. Google: Rampart Sled Hill. 20 min from here. • Bier Works – CO brewed German beer. Authentic brats, fire ring. Usually a food truck. • Blue Moose - Down the hill in Green Mountain Falls. Local’s favorite for Chiefs games, built in the mid 1900’s. Hang with the gold miners. Pizza, burgers, wings, bar. • Creek Side – Also in GMF. Best breakfast in the county. Go early, the wait can be over 2 hours… it’s that good. Outdoor seating along the creek. • Wines of Colorado – In Cascade, a wine focused restaurant that exhibits Colorado wines. Getting Around Summer & Warmer Months: A personal vehicle is recommended for exploring Woodland Park and the surrounding mountain areas. The neighborhood is enjoyable for short walks, and downtown shops, restaurants, and parks are just minutes away. Highway 24 provides easy access to Colorado Springs and nearby recreation areas, making day trips, hiking, and sightseeing convenient. Winter Months: Travel is still very manageable, but guests should be prepared for snow and changing road conditions. Roads are regularly plowed, and Highway 24 is well maintained, though drive times may occasionally be longer during storms. AWD or 4WD vehicles and quality winter tires are strongly recommended. Public transportation in Woodland Park is limited year-round, so having a personal vehicle provides the most flexibility. That said, most guests find winter driving here straightforward with basic preparation and a little extra care. More Tips on Winter Months: Winter Road conditions (October-March-ish) *(See Welcome Guide for Website Link) • Check the road conditions and see HWY cameras up to Woodland Park on CO DOT. * • The Sun Mountain Chalet is on a fairly steep ‘no outlet’ paved road. It can get slick with heavy snow fall in the winter months. A small all-wheel drive SUV with decent tires (or better- 4x4, Mud/Snow tires) won’t have a problem. A large, rear wheel drive SUV, with nearly bald tires will have the toughest time. Not to worry, if you can’t get up the hill, just park down the road and hike up to the house. Expect the conditions to improve with each pass of the city snowplow/salt truck. • Cheap tire chains are at Walmart, the good ones are sold at Auto Parts stores and Tractor Supply. • Colorado Traction Law *
